Acupuncture is one of the most commonly used complementary medical treatments in the world. Originating in China more than 2,500 years ago as an essential part of  traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture actually describes a collection of procedures involving stimulation of anatomical points on the body by a variety of techniques. The most common, in addition to acupuncture, are: moxibustion, Tui na (Chinese Massage), and cupping.

In 2010, acupuncture and moxibustion of traditional Chinese medicine were inscribed on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, which is a part of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). ​Acupuncture and moxibustion were listed in the domain of "knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe."

In 2011, Huang Di Nei Jing (《黄帝内经》Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon) and Ben Cao Gang Mu (《本草纲目》Compendium of Materia Medica) were included on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register. The Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon is the earliest and most important written work of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The Compendium of Materia Medica is an encyclopedic work on traditional Chinese materia medica before the 16th century.
